The Power of the Edge for Smart Manufacturing
Global markets are imposing strong changing conditions for industrial companies running their businesses, facing strong pressures related to the customization of products in high flexible production systems. The fourth industrial revolution aims to promotes the digitization of the traditional industries, aiming intelligent factories characterized by adaptability, efficiency, functionality, reliability, safety, and usability.
Cyber-physical systems, combined with emerging IT technologies, such as Internet of Things, Big data, cloud computing and edge computing, constitute a technological basis to address this challenge, providing significant benefits in several emergent application domains, such as smart grids, smart buildings, smart transportation, smart healthcare, and particularly in smart manufacturing.
This presentation presents the concept of cyber-physical systems and discusses the balance of combining cloud, fog and edge computing to develop such solutions for smart manufacturing. Particularly, it discusses how industrial agents technology can support the development of intelligent, dynamic and self-* large-scale cyber-physical systems, covering the inter- and intra-enterprise integration and running in environments covering cloud, fog and edge computing layers. At the end, some successful FP7 and H2020 research projects will be described, emphasizing the industrial deployment of such cyber-physical systems.
